Supplements for Breastfeeding & Postpartum Moms
There is no shortage of supplements marketed to moms, and very little calm advice about which of them are worth your money and your energy. This is SR Adéle de Beer’s plain-language overview of the three we actually keep on the shelf, why they are there, and how to decide what suits you.
The season your body is in
Pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding are the most physically demanding seasons most women will go through. Your body is building, healing and feeding, often on broken sleep and whatever you could eat with one hand.
Good food, water, rest and help remain the foundation, and no supplement replaces any of them. What a small, well-chosen range can do is make one part of looking after yourself simple on the days when nothing else is.
Omega-3
Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, are essential fats that have to come from your diet. Most of us do not eat oily fish often enough, which is why a daily omega-3 is one of the most common supplements moms take. We stock a premium Antarctic krill oil in which the omega-3 is naturally bound to phospholipids, with naturally occurring choline and astaxanthin, and no fishy aftertaste. Krill is a shellfish, so it is not suitable if you have a seafood allergy.
Collagen
Collagen is the body’s most abundant structural protein, found in skin, hair, nails and connective tissue. Our Lactation Collagen Booster combines premium hydrolysed collagen peptides with BA10, a clinically advanced inactive yeast naturally rich in B-vitamins, amino acids and minerals. It is dairy-free, sugar-free and neutral in flavour, so it blends into coffee, water or a smoothie without you noticing it.
Fibre
Digestion often feels different after birth, and fibre is a normal part of a balanced diet that many moms fall short on in those early weeks. Probitec Fibre is a 3-in-1 daily sachet of prebiotic fibre, glutamine and digestive enzymes – easy to stir into a drink or soft food, and easy to keep up with on a busy day.
How to choose
Start with what your body is asking for rather than with what is trending. If you rarely eat fish, omega-3 is a sensible first step. If you are recovering from birth and struggling to eat proper meals, the collagen booster is the easiest daily win. If digestion feels sluggish, a gentle fibre is the place to begin.
Add one thing at a time, give it a few weeks, and keep it simple enough that you will actually remember to take it. If you are not sure, ask – SR Adéle would far rather talk it through with you than have you guess.
Safety first
These are supplements and not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, living with a medical condition or have a known allergy – the krill oil contains shellfish – please speak to SR Adéle or your healthcare provider before starting anything new. Always read the label, stick to the recommended daily amount, and keep supplements out of reach of children.
