There is a moment in a 4D scan when your baby turns towards the probe and you see a face rather than a shape – a nose, a yawn, a little hand pressed against a cheek. It is one of the loveliest things we get to be part of.
Our 4D baby sonar scans are a keepsake experience, done gently and without rushing, by a midwife who understands how much this means to you.
The best time to come
Between 26 and 32 weeks is the sweet spot. Earlier than that and there is not quite enough definition; later and your baby is usually tucked too low and too snug for a clear view. Drinking plenty of water in the day or two beforehand often helps, and a baby who has recently had something to eat tends to be more active and more cooperative.
Even so, babies do exactly as they please. If yours is facing away or hiding behind a hand on the day, we will do everything we reasonably can to coax a better view – and if you would like to try again, you are welcome to book a repeat scan at an additional consult fee.
What the scan is and is not
This is a non-diagnostic keepsake scan. It is not a medical or anomaly scan, it does not replace the scans and check-ups arranged by your doctor or gynaecologist, and we do not use it to assess your baby’s health, growth or development. We also do not check or confirm your baby’s gender – that is your doctor’s to share. Please keep every appointment your doctor has scheduled.

R550.00 per scan, and we set aside a full hour so nobody feels rushed and your baby has time to settle into a good position. Afterwards we send your images straight to your WhatsApp, so you can share them with family the moment you walk out. Scans are done at Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital, Main Entrance Corridor, 255 Bourke Street, Muckleneuk, Pretoria, 0002, inside Dr. Jana Bloem’s Consulting Room.
